Follow Me: A Journey Through the Gospel of Matthew
One hour a week. One gospel, start to finish. One keepsake journal, built page by page. Follow Me takes our middle schoolers through the entire Gospel of Matthew across the program year.
How a Session Works
- Gather & Settle (5 min) - a short prayer, and settling in with journals in hand.
- Scripture (10 min) - the week's passage, read aloud together.
- Watch (≤15 min) - a short clip from The Chosen framed with context before and after.
- Wondering (15 min) - open, CGS-style wondering questions in small groups - there's no single “right” answer expected.
- Journal Page (10–15 min) - young people add this week's page and a small tactile craft element to their Apprentice's Journal.
- Closing (5 min) - a short prayer or blessing to close.
My Apprentice's Journal
In Week 1, each student builds a simple keepsake booklet/journal -a binder or ribbon-tied cardstock pages. Every week's page follows the same layout: Writing down a verse (a key line from that week's reading that stood out to them), The Scene (a quick sketch of the clip they watched in three or more cartoon strip-like drawings), and My Memory Marker (a small tactile craft element that becomes a visual trail through the whole journal). By the program's end, each young person can say they have read an entire Gospel from front to back - no two journals look alike - each is a physical, tactile record of a full year’s exploration and discussion.
Our Framework: Apprenticeship
The whole year is framed around the ancient idea of discipleship. But we use the word “apprentice” instead because its culturally more understandable. Jesus did not create the formation process of a handful of disciples following a rabbi around, it was WHO he invited to this honor that was revolutionary. Our middle schoolers aren't just learning Bible stories; they're apprenticing. The journal they build isn't a workbook – it's field notes on becoming like their Rabbi.
