Thomas J. Sugrue is a Detroit native and currently professor and director of the Cities Collaborative at New York University. A leading scholar of race, civil rights, and cities, he is author of four books and editor of four others. The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit won several awards, including the Bancroft Prize in History. Sugrue’s essays regularly appear in major periodicals. In addition to his scholarly work, Sugrue has served as an expert witness in several civil rights and voting rights cases.
